Is Vitamin E Good For Skin | Hea Boosters

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps reduce UV damage to the skin, moisturizes it, prevents signs of ageing, and keeps it soft, supple, and healthy. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is also a powerful antioxidant, thus making it effective at combating free radicals produced by toxins in the environment that can damage your skin.

How does vitamin E benefit the skin?

It is widely known that vitamin E assists in various kinds of cellular repair, from sun damage to healing support for scars or burns. But how does vitamin E work on the skin? What is the mechanism?

As an antioxidant, it prevents oxidative damage to cells by removing excess free radicals before they start damaging the body's DNA, protein, and fatty tissues. Neutralising these free radicals is therefore essential to avoid oxidative stress. Therefore, introducing antioxidants affects blood circulation. This one key characteristic of vitamin E as a "free-radical scavenger". With powerful antioxidant properties is how vitamin E helps in preventing signs of ageing and wrinkles as well.

Side-effects of vitamin E?

Vitamin E serums, creams are not advisable for super sensitive, very oily, or acne-prone skin because the oil is heavy, and tends to block pores causing more breakouts or acne. Although it's very unusual, topical vitamin E can sometimes cause an allergy, irritation, itching, or perhaps even a rash when applied to the skin. Consult your doctor before using any Vitamin E medication or oil on your skin.

Sources of Vitamin E:

Vitamin E levels in the body decrease with age and excess exposure to the sun and UV light. Therefore, this nutrient needs to be replenished in the right quantities to continue to protect and nourish your skin. This can be done through an adequate intake of vitamin E through food or health supplements. Many cosmetics and skincare products such as creams and lotions also contain Vitamin E as an ingredient. Therefore, ensuring the inclusion of Vitamin E in your diet is very important for good skin and hair.

Foods that contain vitamin E:

The daily recommended dose of vitamin E is 7.5 - 10 mg.

  • Orange juice - 1 glass of unsweetened juice contains 0.71 mg, which forms 7.1% of the daily requirement of vitamin E. The effects of vitamin E are even greater when combined with vitamin C and oranges are abundant in the latter.
  • A quarter cup of Salmon and other seafood has 2 mg of Vitamin E
  • Half a cup (100 gram) of Spinach contains 4mg of Vitamin E

While several over-the-counter topical creams are available, it is not advisable to use these without a doctor's recommendation as they can cause some inconvenient side effects.

As mentioned above, there are several natural forms of vitamin E. It can also be processed synthetically. However, naturally obtained vitamin E is more potent than its synthetic version. Therefore, it is advisable to consume foods rich in vitamin E. Apart from all the external creams, having a balanced diet is always advised.
